Warehouse Hacks: Real Tricks from the Crew at Warehousing Etc

At Warehousing Etc, we know the real magic doesn’t happen in spreadsheets—it happens in the aisles, on the pallet jacks, and in those early morning shifts where coffee and grit get the job done.

If you’ve spent more than five minutes on the floor here, you’ve probably heard someone say, “Work smarter, not harder.” That’s not just talk. We’ve picked up some clever tricks over the years that make our days smoother, safer, and—dare we say—smarter.

So here’s a peek into the unofficial training manual: real hacks from real workers at Warehousing Etc.

1. Always Have Tape Close at Hand

Get yourself a good tape gun. This will really save you time from messing around with stubborn tape and a tape gun. You can also use tape to repair any light visible wear to exterior packaging. Repairing light exterior damages really makes the exterior look surprisingly better during storage and when the customer receives it.

2. Labels: Your Future Self’s Best Friend

At Warehousing Etc, we move fast—but not at the cost of confusion. Label everything, even if it seems obvious in the moment. That pallet of “miscellaneous” becomes a mystery in two hours flat.

3. Back Belt = Back Saver

Wearing your support belt isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign you plan on doing this job for more than a couple months. And you’ll feel the difference at the end of every shift.

4. Become an Expert Using a Pallet Jack

To easily move a pallet jack, start by sliding the forks completely under the pallet while making sure it’s centered and stable. Then, pump the handle up and down a few times to raise the pallet just enough that it clears the floor. Once the pallet is off the ground, pull the pallet jack using the handle rather than pushing it. This gives you better control, especially when steering. Use smooth, steady movements and tilt the handle to guide the front wheels in the direction you want to go. When you’re ready to lower the pallet, gently squeeze the release lever on the handle to bring the load back to the ground. Don’t forget to always watch your surroundings and keep your path clear to move safely and efficiently.

5. Work Towards a Common Goal

We prioritize teamwork and unity by ensuring every team member is working towards the same goal. From leadership to the floor crew, everyone understands their role in supporting efficient operations, meeting customer expectations, and maintaining a safe work environment. We foster a culture of communication and collaboration where goals are clearly defined and progress is shared openly. By aligning individual responsibilities with the bigger picture, we create a strong, motivated team that moves in the same direction.

6. Snack Smarter

“Banana. Jerky. Something salty. Thank me later.”

Don’t rely on vending machines and energy drinks. A smart snack combo keeps you powered up without crashing halfway through your shift. Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated. This is crucial for warehouse workers in Tampa, where high heat and humidity can quickly lead to dehydration and fatigue, affecting both safety and productivity.

7. Own the First Hour

We’ve learned it here the hard way—win the first hour and the day feels like a series of small victories. Drag through the first 60 minutes, and the rest of the day feels like a breeze.

8. Work Smarter, Not Harder

  • Memorize Layout and Locations: By knowing the locations of the layout you then know where to go to get or put away anything.
  • Plan your routes: When picking or moving items, group tasks by location to reduce backtracking.
  • Use a Rolling Cart: Having a rolling cart, with the needed supplies, works out because then you can also put the items you are putting away or picking on it.
Lift With Your Knees

9. Stay Sharp & Safe

  • Stretch before your shift: Prevent strains with 5–10 minutes of light stretching.

  • Lift with your legs, not your back: Classic tip—but it works. Bend knees, not your spine.

  • Stay hydrated: Dehydration = fatigue. Drink water throughout your shift. Try to drink Liquid IV or Gatorades, especially in hot warehouses. It does seem like it helps to add salt/electrolytes when really sweating.

10. Stay Cool Mentally

  • Pace yourself: Don’t burn out in the first hour. Find a rhythm.

  • Use music/podcasts (if allowed): Makes repetitive work more enjoyable.

  • Celebrate wins: Whether it’s meeting your pick goal or avoiding a mistake—small wins matter.

11. The Best Shrink Wrapping Tool

The Manplow is a must buy for shrink wrapping. No more bending over and lifting arms very high, just use the handle/pole. You also do NOT burn your hands from the wrap because the roll spins on the pole. The only thing is, the way you buy the Manplow by default ends up eventually having issues where the plastic holder gets hot and the wrap roll gets stuck to it. To avoid this issue you can buy these replacement plastic ends and use them, they do not stick to the roll of wrap like the stock plastic ends do.

12. What To Do With Big and Awkward Freight

Have freight that is extra heavy, hard to stack on a pallet, or keeps shifting in transit?
Consider:
  • Adding heavy duty corner boards to the corners of the freight.
  • Banding the freight to the pallet.
  • Using heavy duty (high gauge) shrink wrap.

13. Need On Demand Warehouse Labor Fast?

We use Veryable for on-demand warehouse labor. We get folks with as little as 1-2 hours of notice, and more often with 12-24 hours of notice. Veryable has an online interface where we post projects that need done, like unloading a container or restacking a shifted load. Then the laborers on the Veryable platform bid on the projects to be accepted. The laborers get reviewed for past jobs they have done and get rated on how often they show up for a job, so you can get an idea of the quality of the laborers before accepting.

Final Words from the Warehousing Etc Crew

We might not wear suits, but we keep the whole supply chain moving. The crew at Warehousing Etc takes pride in doing it right—and doing it smart. These are just a few of the tricks we’ve picked up along the way.
